Addressing the Roots of Disharmony

Why Use Diet, Exercise & Lifestyle Measures?

Every pattern of disharmony has a root cause.  Sometimes it's completely external, a pathogenic factor from outside, such as virus, affects us and causes dysfunction within our system.  Sometimes it is a so called "internal" disharmony, a problem which arises as a result of a loss of function or imbalance of one system or another.  In either circumstance, be it the reason the external factor was able to cause us problems, or the reason the internal imbalance has arisen at all, is often as a result of our life choices.  Primarily what we eat, what we do and how we do it.

Our school of Chinese medicine comes from a complete tradition which includes advice on movement, breathing and diet in addition to the clinical therapeutic methods used to restore health.  This living tradition gives us a detailed road-map to maximising ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally.  By following prescribed exercises and guidelines for living we can return to health more quickly and invest in our long term health by strengthening our immune system, managing stress effectively and disengaging from our perpetual cycles of thinking.

Food literally builds us from the inside out, "you are what you eat" is an absolute truism. As such diet is a critical factor in defining our overall constitution and our resources of available energy.  Our traditional approach to diet is to simplify, by reducing refined processed foods and replacing them with simple proteins and vegetables, to maximise our foods' nutritional value, by eating the freshest and least degenerated food available, and to preserve the value of that food and most effectively assimilate it by cooking it gently.

With these broad principles our personalised dietary programs can help with weight loss, weight gain, improvement of the quality of our muscles and sinews and with the available energy to function on a daily basis.

Alongside diet, the biggest tool we have to deeply effect ourselves on a constitutional level is movement and exercise.  We change ourselves very easily on a defined physical level simply by engaging in exercise on a regular basis.  If you lift a weight 100 times a day there will be an observable change in your body.  The benefits of exercise are well documented and include improved immune function, reduced risk of musculo-skeletal conditions, reduced stress and improved mental health.

The good news is that you don't need to live by the mantra no pain no gain.  Research has shown that conscious exercise which engages the attention and body simultaneously is amongst the best forms of exercise for health.  In our tradition we use well known practices such as Tai Chi or Qigong, but some forms of Yoga or systems such as pilates will work too.

We work with you to find a form of exercise you can enjoy, which works in harmony with the goals of treatment, that you can fit into your schedule and where needed, which directly alleviates and improves your condition in the short and long term.

In the broad sense our lifestyle programmes look at your life as a whole and identify areas which could be responsible for the development or perpetuation of your condition.  Once identified we can look at strategies to potentially change or manage those factors.  Often food and exercise are the first steps in this process as the simplest factors for you to directly control and influence.  We will start our by looking at ways to manage and implement the dietary and movement programmes so you have a space in your life to really take care of your health and well-being.

With the basics in place we can then begin to look at other areas of your life.  Work, family, routines and habitual behaviours, all of which contribute to your patterns of life which is reflected in your overall health and function.  We aim to identify the potential for change and should you choose to pursue it, support you through those changes.

  • From start to finish I had a great experience with the Natural Health and Wellness Clinic. I was being treated with acupuncture to support IVF cycles. Martyn supported me through two cycles and offered a lot of advice, guidance and support through both. He always took time to explain the treatment and any alterations to support the cycle. I always felt a priority when fitting in appointments to fit my IVF schedule. Having used acupuncture before this was a totally different and positive experience. I would't hesitate to use the clinic again myself if required which is the best recommendation I can give. I'm currently pregnant with twins and I thank Martyn for his part in that.*

  • After a year of unsuccessfully trying to conceive, my partner and I decided to give acupuncture a try before moving on to the serious IVF process.  Martyn was very clear and calm in his approach, he gave us acupuncture treatments and herbs along with some changes to our diet and exercise over several months in what he called a preparation period.  The period pain I had experienced every month for as long as I can remember completely disappeared with the treatments and it must have been linked to our problems to start a family as after 5 months we were blessed with success!  I highly recommend Martyn at NHW, I don’t think our little girl would be here without him.*

  • I’ve only had acupuncture once before, but I felt completely at ease with Martyn. He was very thorough with my medical history and in assessing what needed to be worked on. He was also very happy to answer all of my questions. After the session and in the days following I noticed immediate improvements to my back and shoulder pain which I have been suffering with for some years. Martyn was professional, provided a clean, relaxing environment and results that really worked. I will definitely be using his services again.*

  • We contacted the natural health and wellness clinic after we researched acupuncture for IVF. We wanted to give ourselves the best chances of success in our last NHS treatment cycle. After talking to Martyn we started around two months before our transfer was due. Ten weeks later and we are pregnant! I was much more relaxed this time and acupuncture the day before and on the Sunday morning after my procedure seems to have done the trick. We are keeping everything crossed and continuing acupuncture treatments. I wish we had tried acupuncture earlier.*
