We offer supporting treatment through the trimesters of pregnancy all the way up to birth. No matter how far into your pregnancy you are, we can help you to flourish and prepare your body for labour:
Early pregnancy is a delicate time as your body settles down to nourish your newly implanted embryo. Acupuncture at this time may help to increase the blood flow to the uterus, maximising nutritional supply to the developing cells. Acupuncture also positively modulates the immune response which it is believed can be linked with a reduction in risk of rejection of the embryo by the mothers immune system. Combined with monitoring of the pulse, regular acupuncture and herbal treatments have been seen to reduce the occurrence of miscarriage in early pregnancy following IVF, some studies indicate by a margin of 10%. After the first few delicate weeks have passed acupuncture can be a powerful tool to manage any nausea and vomiting experienced with morning sickness and to combat associated problems with lack of appetite.
At a time when mothers are advised to avoid strong medication, acupuncture can be a safe efficient method to treat a range of common side effects experienced in pregnancy. Around 15-20% of pregnant women are affected by irritability, anxiety and depression and acupuncture can help you to relax and manage the emotional side of your journey. Acupuncture has also been seen to as effective as medication in the treatment of insomnia, giving you a drug free, natural way to get the sleep you need. We can also effectively offer treatment for heartburn and digestive upset, back pain, swollen joints and haemorrhoids meaning you can relax and get back to enjoying your pregnancy.
Throughout your pregnancy our approach to physical therapies will aim to prepare your body to be as strong and relaxed as possible to give birth. In the final trimester our clinical treatments will also be pointed towards preparations for labour and delivery. We primarily use a combination of acupuncture, bodywork and moxibustion at this time to relieve physical symptoms such as backache, sciatica and pelvic discomfort. We can also use these tools to effectively induce labour in overdue mothers and to encourage breech babies to turn from week 32 onward. With good preparation and treatments to alleviate pain and encourage relaxation in the final stages we can help you to be as relaxed a possible in preparation for the big day to come.
